What Habit Loop Are You Stuck In?

Since I was 17, I’ve been stuck in the diet-splurge habit loop.

But, I made a promise to myself about a year ago that I wasn’t going on another diet. I was SO sick of dieting, losing weight, feeling good and then spending the months that followed slowly putting it back on again. I finally realised that once you start dieting, you never stop.

So, I figured that if I just stopped dieting, my brain would cotton on to the fact that I wasn’t going to deprive myself anymore and the desire to overindulge would eventually disappear.

I’m delighted to say that, overall, this strategy’s working pretty well for me… but there’s something about Christmas!! I don’t think I know a single person that doesn’t splurge a bit (or a lot!) over the Christmas holidays. If you’re the exception, please let me know your secret!

So, this week, I created a yoga sequence designed to aid digestion, I figured if you’re feeling anything like me at the moment, it would be well received.

This time last year, my Christmas binge would have triggered the January diet but not anymore. I’ve finally broken that habit loop and have no intention of getting sucked back into it. Instead, I’ll go back to my normal way of eating and won’t beat myself up for overindulging at Christmas. I’ll also focus on doing things that’ll energise me to help pull me out of my Christmas food coma!

Our days are made up of habits that we are often totally unaware of, Maybe you’ve gotten into the habit of checking your phone for 5 minutes before you get out of bed in the morning or you always have something sweet after dinner.

One action triggers another without us even realising it. It’s through practices like yoga, that encourage you to become more mindful, that you’ll start to notice these habits and you can decide whether it’s a habit that serves you or if it’s a habit that doesn’t. If it doesn’t, it’s time to set about breaking it.
