Stop Letting Your Thoughts Run The Show

Jun 20, 2022

It was my daughter, Charlotte’s 5th birthday on Sunday so we had 9 of her friends over for a party.

I have to admit, I was dreading it!

Last week, as Sunday drew closer, I found myself thinking about it more and more… had I planned enough activities… did I have enough food… what if some kids have allergies and I don’t have anything they can eat… how am I going to fit everyone into my living room… will I be able to cope with 10 x 5 year olds and a 3 year old for 2 hours… what will my house look like by the time it’s over… how am I going to find the energy to get through the rest of the day once it’s over…

The thoughts just kept coming, it was ridiculous!

And do you know what? It was all absolutely fine. Everyone had a great time and it was nowhere near as bad as I’d thought it was going to be.

How often do you build something up in your mind so that by the time the event comes you’re either totally dreading it or have talked yourself out of it altogether?

As you can see, I’m prone to a bit of overthinking! I’ve talked myself out of SO many new experiences that probably would have been great fun and could have positively impacted my life.

But yoga has been a godsend for helping me become more aware of my negative thought patterns over the years, and has propelled me on to do quite a bit of mindset work lately. My life is completely different now than it was a year ago. I’m still an overthinker (see story above!) but now I can turn the volume down on my thoughts so they don’t talk me out of creating the life I want to live.

Have a look at your week now and see when you can schedule 20-30 minutes to do yoga then add it to your calendar and set a reminder.

If you take small steps regularly towards creating positive changes, before long you’ll look back and realise just how far you’ve come.
